These jugs were beautifully decorated on canal boats.
A pastel drawing of a mallard family seen on the canal.
Opening the lock - in the rain! |
Canal boats didn't have room for a garden so they painted flowers on plates. The lower plate is a pupil's copy of the original example.
Other plates had castles painted on them to show that their canal boat was like a castle to the family. |

Next I put on a life jacket and went to do the lock, while we were doing the lock there were other people having a canal ride we opend the lock for them. It was very hard work. After that it was my turn to have a canal ride and other people did the lock. Mrs Abban gave us some sheats to do we filled in all the alphabet and the ducks we saw. Soon my canal ride was finished and we went to do history. I got to do history and I got to dress up. The girls wore a shawl, bonnet, pinnie. A boy worea belcher, waistcoat, hat. After that we got to do washing up. We did some washing with a mangle, posser and a dolly. Finally we got to do some pretend cooking. Soon our school was over and we went back to the coach and went back to school.
Rajan: On Thursday the coach took very long to school but finaly it came. When we were at the canal center we were in groups of three. First we had to put on a life jaket on because we were going to be near water. Our first activity was going into the Roger it was very small. I was amazed how people lived in it. next was opening the lock. It was very hard but we managed at the end. After that was the boat trip. I took about half an hour on the boat, I got to steer the boat first. All the things on the paper I found outside. Then we done history Mike told us about canals and old ones to. Then we done dressing up. The boys had to wear a hat a waistcoat and a belcher. And the girls had to wear a bonet and a piny, shawl Then we started to wash the clothes. First I washed the cloths with the dolly then with the bord and the soap. Then I put them through the mangle and they became nice and dry. Then we put some vegtbles in the pot and a duck. Then we had to go back to school. My favourite part of the day was the Roger. I enjoyed my day and I wish I could come back next time.
