Who are the "Friends"?
of the children.
What do we do?
Over the last eight years the Friends have held more than 60 events and raised over £50,000. We've made some very important contributions to the school including several laptop computers, sound-deadening carpet for the classrooms, books, PE equipment, and many other classroom and outdoor items.. We've also contributed to the annual cost of Music Week, Book Week, and several school trips. We' re very proud of what we do!
Why are the Friends important to the school?
Our work helps the school and our children in three ways. First, our funds allow the school to enhance the children?s learning experience beyond the curriculum (such as through school trips or the contact with professional performers in Music Week). Second, we help the school improve the classrooms and update materials and equipment faster than state funding allows. And third, through social activities the Friends add to the sense of community among parents, the school, and local businesses.
What sort of events do the Friends organise?
Here's a flavour - these are some events that we've run over the last year or two:
· Cut-price tickets to a pantomime and other family theatre productions
· Evening events - barn dance, quiz night, themed party with disco.
· An auction of products and services offered by parents and local businesses
· A sponsored children's 'Readathon'
· Sales of calendars designed by the children and professionally produced
· Sales of Christmas puddings with a special label for our school.
· Christmas Fayre with games, seasonal items, and Santa's grotto.
· Family Fun Days and walks
· Sales of cakes and of second-hand clothes and toys.
What is the Friends Committee?
Each year the parents elect a committee whose job it is to lead and organise events and to decide, with the school, how the funds raised will be spent. We send out frequent newsletters in the book bags to keep parents up to date with news of upcoming events, the amount of funds raised, and our spending for the school. To add to the efforts of the committee, many parents like to be 'associate' committee members. Associates provide occasional help with events without the need to attend committee meetings.
How can I help the Friends?
First, you can help by coming along to our events - having fun while knowing that the money you spend helps the school. You can contribute items for our sales such as cakes or second-hand toys and books. You can be a Committee member - a full member or an associate - your choice. Last, you can simply give us your feedback and ideas - let us know what we do well and how we can improve. We're always keen to do better!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
